Keep Your Private Data Safe

Keep Your Private Data Safe

Computer security is a hot topic these days.
In many cases users are aware of the importance of guarding against viruses and spyware threats.
However what may be neglected is protecting your sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands.
If you travel with your laptop or if your PC is easily accessible by others, you should consider the implications of unauthorised access or data theft.
If a computer is stolen or a USB flash drive or CD is mislaid sensitive files, such as financial or business information, can end up in the wrong hands.
There are many instances of this happening, one of the most notable recent occurrences relates to a report on Pvt. Kovco finding its way to Derryn Hinch when a Brigadier left a CD in a laptop at Melbourne Airport. Read the Sydney Morning Herald article here
Although that was a matter of national security, your private data is just as important to you as the incidences of identity theft increase.
If you leave your computer unattended consider password protecting it on screen save. You can also lock the computer by holding down the Windows key and hitting the L key.
When purchasing a new laptop consider the mode that have fingerprint recognition built in. There are also external backup drive caddys being produced with fingerprint recognition.
If you want to protect data on the computer and removable media TrueCrypt is Open Source (free) software that will secure data from all but the most determined hacker. Read more about it here.
Many USB flash drives are supplied with software to password protect data.
